You’ve heard that blogging is a great way to make money online, right? And now you’re wondering how to start your own blog, what topics to write about and how to increase traffic so you can generate an income from your blog.
In this post, I’m going to give you the information you need for a successful blogging business. This includes:
-How To Start Blogging
-What Topics To Write About
-How To Increase Traffic So You Can Make Money
Don’t be fooled, this is not an easy job and easy money. Blogging, if you want to make money from it, takes a lot of time, effort, learning and persistence.
But we’re here to help!
How to Start Blogging
First things first, you need to start a blog! You will need 2 things to start.
Hosting and the domain.
Although the majority of people out there will recommend bluehost (hosting provider), that’s not what I would advise you to do. I started with bluehost and I simply had a bad experience.
Servers are too slow, and support is quite terrible (all non-natives calling you ”Sir” and doing nothing).
Therefore, I switched over to Hostinger and I have only nice words for them.
So, my advice is to go with Hostinger. They have awesome support (and something called premium support) and they’ll teach you anything you need to know when it comes to hosting.
Then, you’ll need a domain name. But, you can only think of domain name after you’ve figured out what to blog about!
What To Blog About
First and foremost, blogging is not easy money!
Blogging takes time, patience and effort to make blog posts that people will actually want to read.
You need to create blog posts that are going to be engaging so your readers will come back for more! You’ll need to find the “hook” that will make people read your content and stop reading other blogs.
It can be hard but it is possible!
When Choosing Your Niche, Consider Market Factors
The market is saturated with blogs about all sorts of different topics.
Now, I know that we would all like to blog about anything or everything that we like: cooking, gardening, gaming, etc.
But, if you want to be successful, put some thought into your blog topic before diving in head first! Here are the first things to consider:
-How much competition there is?
-How will you monetize your blog?
This can help determine how easy it will be for you to make money blogging.
Let’s say that you want to start a blog about video games.
This is actually pretty popular, but there are already tons of blogs out there covering almost every topic imaginable in the gaming world!
So this would be hard to do unless you have some sort of angle. If your blog was going to focus on reviewing different games and how they work, then you’re going to need a way for people to find your site.
Now, I don’t want to say that you should start a blog about finances if you know nothing about it just because it sounds “expensive”.
You should definitely have some interest and quite a bit of knowledge about the topic you will start writing about.
Choose a topic you are well-versed in and has the potential to be profitable.
What’s Your Audience’s Budget
As I said, one of the main things you have to think about is monetization.
And, of course, the bigger your audience’s budget, the more you will be making.
So say that you are writing a blog about, I don’t know, woodwork.
Now, your target audience here would be a middle aged man who liked to make occasional shelf for his wife’s kitchen, or a retiree who is making toys for his grand kids.
Naturally, they wouldn’t have that much money to spare on fancy new machines and tools.
But if you just shift your perspective and start writing about woodworking targeting small businesses or big companies, your earning would skyrocket because the chances are, they wouldn’t be paying from their own pocket.
So, when choosing your niche, choose something you can monetize on top of having a passion and knowledge in it.
The Money-Making Cycle
So, you know to choose a niche that is in demand and that you can monetize, but you should also know that writing content isn’t everything.
You have to stop worrying about every single sentence, every single comma, every single perfect photo placement.
Instead, you have to outsource and use your energy for other things.
So the never ending cycle includes these phases:
- Keyword Research
So if you want to write about your passions without work and make money, this is where you should stop reading.
But if you’re ready for some real work, let me elaborate.
You’re going to have to do this before you start writing your blog posts because you want them to show up when people are searching online for whatever it is that you plan on blogging about!
This means staying on top of the latest trends in Google’s algorithm so that you can know what people are searching to find your topic.
You might have a friend who is an SEO expert, but if not there’s always AhRefs and SEMrush
This is where you’re going to spend some cash.
You can easily find cheap labor on Fiverr or UpWork, and don’t stress about every. single. word.
Now this might seem like a lot of money at first glance, but consider this:
It will save you time to learn more about keyword research, SEO optimization, oureach and more.
Now what do you think about outsourcing? Ready to start working smarter instead of harder?
This is where the fun begins.
You get to start networking with other bloggers and people in your niche!
Now, before you go crazy emailing every blogger that pops into your mind, take a step back for a second. You have to remember that running a blog isn’t their job anymore- they’ve got enough content on their site and they don’t need you to write for them.
So, your best bet is to find the bloggers that are writing about topics that relate to yours but aren’t as well known or popular.
You can use tools like BuzzSumo and Ahrefs again here- find influencers and reach out!
A guest post is an article that is written by somebody who isn’t the owner of the site, but rather somebody who has been given permission to publish on it.
Now, in order to get your article published you would have to be accepted by the site- so not every blog accepts guest posts.
However, if you do manage to find one with an open door, simply follow their submission guidelines and send in your content.
The backlink portion in this cycle is where you’re going to spend some energy.
But don’t worry- just because this is tough work doesn’t mean you can’t outsource it!
You can either hire somebody on Fiverr or UpWork for $ and just let them do the work for you.
Backlinking is an important part of SEO, so I want to share with you some tips on how you can go about doing this correctly.
First, you want to find blogs in your niche.
I would recommend finding a list of them and then reaching out via email with something like this: “Hey! I really enjoy reading the posts on your site.” or “Can we swap links?” or just simply say that you have an article for their team if they accept guest.
Sometimes, you’ll have to pay for your site to be back linked, and the price will depend on the strength and popularity of the website/ blog linking back to yours, so to say.
But having a lot of backlings leading to your website would give search consoles a signal that you know what you’re talking about, consequently ranking you better.
Monetize Your Blog from Day One
If you want to make money blogging, you have to remember one thing, and one thing only:
You’re not a blogger, you’re a business owner.
This means that there will be no period of just writing about what you love without a thought of how to make it count.
You have to think of turning the profit immediately.
High traffic and low prices are the same as low traffic and high prices.
And at the very beginning, you will have very low traffic. So you will have to up the prices or sell expensive products to make it count.
Don’t be afraid to offer consulting or similar services. You’re not losing anything!
How to Make Money Blogging – Ideas and Examples
Think About Affiliate Marketing
Now, you might think that affiliate marketing isn’t the best way to make money.
And I agree. Having your own product is always a good thing.
But let me put it this way. When you search for best, say, headphones, what do you see?
Every. Single. Website who’s ranking on the first page is selling someone else’s product.
If you search for How to Redecorate Your Kitchen, what do you see?
A million products that the post is recommending. Wallpapers, countertops, appliances, you name it! And aaaaaall selling someone else’s product.
If you find the right audience, affiliate marketing is a cash cow!
So the next time you’re thinking of a topic for your blog, think about how you can make money from it.
Display Adds Through Google AdSense or Ezoic
You can make money through display advertising.
This is a really popular way to monetize your blog because it’s super easy and you don’t have to do much other than just add the code that they provide into your site!
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
Now there are two ways of doing this: Google AdSense or Ezoic.
I highly recommend Ezoic- not only do they pay more to their publishers, but the ads are better and you don’t have to worry about Google banning your site because of “inappropriate content”.
Ezoic is a little bit harder to get approved for (if it’s your first time applying). So in my opinion, AdSense is a better option if you’re just getting started and want to get your feet wet.
And once again: don’t forget about monetizing with affiliate links!
Write Reviews for Profit
If you’re a blogger, I’m sure that you get sent products from time to time.
Well, why not make money blogging with this?
Most bloggers are turning towards reviewing products because it’s actually one of the easiest ways to make money!
You can either charge your advertisers for reviews or just recommend their product and earn a commission.
There are a lot of different review sites you can join and it’s an easy way to make some extra cash on the side!
If you’re into websites, maybe flippa.com is something that interests you?
But how does it work? You buy an old domain name for a cheap price and try to make money blogging with it!
It’s pretty easy actually- the only thing you have to do is upload content (which can be done in less than an hour) and then you can monetize it with ads.
If the site is good enough, making money blogging shouldn’t be a problem!
Or you can simply raise the revenue and sell the website to the highest bidder, investing that money in a new website to flip.
Like a middleman, with a few extra steps.
We all know that Amazon’s Kindle store is one of the biggest e-book suppliers on the internet.
But did you know how much money can be made selling books? Especially when we’re talking about non-fiction, self help and similar topics!
All you need to do is write a book (or pay someone else) and upload it to Amazon’s KDP- and then wait for the money to roll in.
And don’t just limit yourself to book writing! You can also sell e-books that you have previously published on other platforms or even blogs as a digital download!
And don’t be afraid of outsourcing or ghostwriters.
Create Courses & Sell Them Through Teachable or Udemy
If your blog focuses on informational topics, like blogging for example (which is what I blog about), you can create courses and sell them through Teachable or Udemy.
The process of creating a course isn’t that hard- all it takes is some time!
All you have to do is plan out the content, upload it onto your site/Teachable account and then wait for the money to come in.
And if you don’t have a blog, no worries! Just write out the content and sell it on your own website or social media channels.
The best part is that Teachable lets you choose from different pricing options including completely free courses that users can enroll in- so there’s something for everyone!
Freelance Writing & Content Marketing for Other Blogs/ Websites (to Make Money)
This one will be the most work out of all the other ways to make money blogging. But it’s also going to be one of the best!
The key is being able to write a lot and fast- because that’s what clients are looking for these days.
So don’t just stick with writing blog posts, but try your hand at a few content marketing gigs too!
Start a Consulting Business
If you have a blog, there’s no doubt that you know your way around it.
So why not create consulting packages for other bloggers?
You can design the service however you want, and it can be about whatever you feel you can sell your expertise in.
Your clients are going to love this because they’ll get an expert’s advice- all without paying a fortune!
It doesn’t have to be blogging related, you can also work with other internet marketers and do consulting for affiliate marketing or anything else that your target audience might find useful.
Just make sure you set the price accordingly so it covers your time spent on each project.
Start a Dropshipping Store
Dropshipping is one of the most popular ways to make money online.
And it’s easy- all you have to do is create a store, find some products that you can sell and then just sit back while your shop does the work for you!
There are plenty of dropship companies out there so finding something suitable shouldn’t be a problem.
The hardest part of it is finding the right niche and product to sell- but once you do, your store will practically run itself!
You can even outsource customer service or use Shopify’s messaging apps so that your customers feel more satisfied with their purchases.
If you’re looking for a way to make money blogging, there are plenty of options available that will suit different skillsets and interests. The key is finding the right niche or topic that your target audience cares about- then creating content around it!
You can also monetize other sites by providing services such as freelance writing or consulting. Don’t be afraid to try something new, like dropshipping stores or ghostwriting either!
And remember, continuous learning is the only way you will get anywhere. You are not a blogger, you’re a business owner!
How To Increase Traffic So You Can Make Money
The most important thing is for people to find your blog! But how do they find it? It’s not like we’re living in the “old days” where everyone read newspapers and magazines
